Week 2 Picks

Last week: 7-9

Considering the Bears and Panthers massive upsets, I'm pleased with a 7-9 result. I can't overstate how amazed I am at how bad the Colts looked. They're one of the older teams in the league at this point; maybe it's finally catching up with them?

This week, I've gone with eight road underdogs, and four road favorites. I have no idea why. Some of these lines seem goofy to me. Let's discuss.

Tennessee(+1.5) over CINCINNATI
  • Cincy gained like fourteen yards of total offense last week, and Tennessee knocked off a preseason Super Bowl contender with a quarterback who had a nervous breakdown halfway through the game. You really think the Bungles can keep it within 1.5?
New Orleans (+.5) over WASHINGTON
  • Hmmm. Jason Campbell vs. Drew Brees?
Chicago(+3.5) over CAROLINA
  • I don't think anyone expected these teams to be a combined 2-0 after last week, but they both pulled colossal upsets against Super Bowl favorites. I take Chicago only because they looked dominant against Indy while Carolina juuuuust barely managed to squeak by the Chargers. And I think Indy is the better team (better quarterback, receivers, defense, kicker, etc.). So I like Chicago with the points.
Buffalo(+6.5) over JACKSONVILLE

Green Bay(-2.5) over DETROIT

KANSAS CITY(-3.5) over Oakland

New York Giants(-8.5) over ST. LOUIS
  • Anything less than St. Louis +10 this year is free money, I think.
Indianapolis(-1.5) over MINNESOTA

San Francisco(+8.5) over SEATTLE

Atlanta(+8.5) over TAMPA BAY

New England(+2.5) over NEW YORK JETS
  • Are you prepared to live in a world where the Patriots are 2.5 point underdogs to the Jets? Blows my fucking mind, man.
Miami(+6.5) over ARIZONA

HOUSTON(-4.5) over Baltimore

San Diego(-2.5) over DENVER

CLEVELAND(+5.5) over Pittsburgh
  • Can you recall a more anticipated game for the Browns? This is the most important game Cleveland has had since the 2002 wild-card playoffs against the Steelers when Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala put the icing on a 22 point fourth quarter with a three yard TD run, dropping the Browns like a bunch of suckers, 36-33. That was sweet. Since then, the Browns have been consistently shitty. They went 10-6 last year, still couldn't beat the Steelers, and now everyone thinks they're going to take over the AFC North. I don't think that's going to happen. But I do think they're going to give the Steelers a game on Sunday. They're under a tremendous amount of pressure to improve on what they did last year, and after last week's shit sandwich they offered up at Dallas questions are beginning to circulate about how legit they actually are. The natives are restless. Don't be surprised to hear Braylon Edwards get booed the first time he alligator-arms a pass over the middle -- those Cleveland fans are brutal. And stupid. But the Browns have a lot of weapons, and I think they'll have success getting after Ben who is nursing a sore shoulder. If this game were at Heinz Field, I'd lay the points. But these divisional road games are always brutal, and I'm not ready to count the Browns out just yet.
DALLAS (-6.5) over Philadelphia
  • Dallas steamrolled what is supposedly a playoff-contender in Cleveland, while Philadelphia did likewise with what will probably prove to be the worst team in the league. It's so early in the season that I don't know what to believe. When in doubt, the wise strategy is to take the points. But I just feel like in Dallas the Eagles are going to have a hard time keeping up with the Cowboys. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if these teams split the season series.

You are out of your mind, I'd take the Steelers giving twice as many points as the Browns are getting now.

I don't really care about the rest.

You probably would have thought me "out of my mind" had I picked the Panthers to upset the Chargers last week, straight up. And you probably would have thought I was _completely_ "out of my mind" if I had picked the Bears to beat the Colts, straight up, in Indy, on national television, at the opening of Indy's new stadium.

So, you know, I'm just saying that it's possible for the Browns to keep it a 6-point game. Doesn't sound that crazy to me.
